"Axions and the cooling of white dwarfs"

The evolution of white dwarfs is just a gravothermal process of cooling. The accuracy and precision of their luminosity function allow to use them as laboratories to test new ideas in Physics, from Condensed Matter to High Energy Physics including Gravitation. Recent theoretical and observational results strongly suggest they are cooling more rapidly than expected. A possible way out to this problem is the inclusion of a cooling term due to axions able to interact with electrons. In this talk I quickly review the physics of white dwarfs and I discuss the plausibility of the axion solution.
