I will explain the formal construction of a category of Feynman graphs, featuring etale maps. The construction is based on and motivated by a notion of compact symmetric multicategory --- the category bears the same relation to this notion as the category of finite linear orders bears to categories --- but it is expected that the category may also be useful in quantum field theory.
